Another University of Iowa alum’s comment on Twitter reminded me of what a great place we have there in Iowa City: The Pentacrest.
He was reminiscing about watching the Old Capitol Criterium as cyclists raced by the Union and up the hill.
I mentioned that I’d been down there a few years ago to watch.
The Pentacrest is memorable for lots of other reasons, too. Anti-war gatherings decades ago, a Chuck Berry concert in September – just a few weeks ago, two years of German language classes, a romantic moment or two….
The two pictures are from the 2008 Old Cap Crit. You can find a few more here: Click

B.J.: You’re right on. The Pentacrest is a special place for all kinds of reasons. The beautiful center of campus, yes; but also the place of some really interesting and memorable events when I was at Iowa. The anti-apartheid rallies and sit-ins of the mid-80s. The annual spring stop by Brother Jed and Sister Cindy, who would scream that all of us were going to hell. Perhaps what was most meaningful to me is that I knew that my dad and my grandfather had walked those same Pentacrest sidewalks as Iowa students themselves.
